What do the statistics mean?

Rates

Hand hygiene compliance rates for in-patient units are calculated for all Ontario hospitals, as percentages, using the following formula:

# of times hand hygiene performed x 100

# of observed hand hygiene indications

These percentages reflect:

  1. hand hygiene before initial patient/patient environment contact by combined health care provider type (e.g., nurses, allied health professionals, physicians, etc.)

  2. hand hygiene after patient/patient environment contact by combined health care provider type (e.g., nurses, allied health professionals, physicians, etc.)

Numbers

These numbers represent the number of times hand hygiene was performed for a particular moment during the reporting period

* Due to the small number of in-patients and the nature of care provided at South Street Hospital, hand hygiene auditors were unable to complete the necessary number of hand hygiene observations to meet the minimum requirement for public reporting to the MOHLTC.
