Date: Thursday March 17, 2011

Presented by: Dr. Adam Dukelow, Local Medical Director, Stephanie Romano, Regional Paramedic Educator, and Stephanie Grant, Primary Care Paramedic

Brief Description:

Anaphylaxis is a life threatening immunological reaction that often leaves paramedics unsure about how to address its signs and symptoms effectively. What better way to discuss the appropriate management of allergic and anaphylactic reactions than by presenting a case study of an EMS call that occurred within one of the SWORBHP services?

Paramedics of all levels will benefit from this paramedic rounds, as you will be able to:

  • Explain the etiology and pathophysiology of an allergic/anaphylactic reaction.

  • Describe the basic pharmacology of Diphenhydramine, Salbutamol, and Epinephrine in relation to an allergy and anaphylaxis.

  • Apply the appropriate management of an allergic/anaphylactic reaction to a Case Study.

  • Demonstrate the proper application of the SWORBHP Anaphylaxis/Allergic Reaction Protocol ACP & PCP
