London, Ontario - The research team of Drs Gerard M. Guiraudon, Douglas L. Jones, Daniel Bainbridge, and Terence M. Peters have recently been successful in publishing their paper “Off-Pump Positioning of a Conventional Aortic Valve Prosthesis via the Left Ventricular Apex, using the Universal Cardiac Introducer® ,Under Sole Ultrasound Guidance, in the porcine model”, in the Innovations Journal.
The research team was able to study for the first time the feasibility of duplication the insertion of conventional aortic valve prosthesis, currently performed on the open arrested heart. This new surgical approach has been developed in London, and intends to eliminate the main cause of morbidity and mortality associated with open heart surgery, and delivering identical quality of repair on the heart lesions.
The project was a multidisciplinary collaboration with the Departments of Surgery, Cardiology, Anesthesia, Medicine and Physiology, and Cardiac Imaging at Robarts Research Institute.
