<London, Ontario> Patient safety is LHSC’s highest priority. To ensure patients receive a safe care experience and our staff work in a safe environment CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics) has developed a training simulation program designed to sharpen the skills of support service workers (SSWs) and environmental service workers (ESWs).
“The simulation program is an example of finding new and innovative ways to enhance the patient experience by focusing on infection control practices,” said Bonnie Adamson, president and CEO, London Health Sciences Centre, as she welcomed participating ESWs and SSWs. “This highly innovative approach is an example of how we live our emerging vision of exceptional experiences, extraordinary people and engaging partnerships.”
CSTAR’s ESW & SSW simulation program simulation program takes place over two days. 24 staff members participated in the training; and were divided into two groups of 12 twelve.
The first day consists of lectures and panel discussions with hospital and industry leaders focusing on hospital acquired infections, what constitutes a “good clean,” and cleaning demonstrations.
During the second day of the program ESWs and SSWs are given the opportunity to practice their skills in an environment that replicates an operating room found in Victoria Hospital or University Hospital during a trauma surgery, between surgeries, and at the end of the day. Participants receive feedback from their peers as well as industry leaders.
“The program demonstrates how simulation training improves overall team performance and advances patient care quality and safety,” said John Parker, director, CSTAR. “The project is setting an important example for LHSC and we are very proud of leadership shown by ESW and SSW staff in making this a reality.”
