Co-generation

At London Health Sciences Centre, we have the ability to generate our own electricity. This is a great way for us to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while being better prepared for extended blackout situations. Up until 2006, we were generating about five megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 3,500 average size homes in London. This electricity is being produced by an actual jet engine supplied by Rolls Royce.

In 2006 we added a back-pressure steam driven turbine that captures another two megawatts of essentially “free energy” bringing our electrical generation capacity up to 7 megawatts, enough power to supply over 5,000 homes.
