London hospitals connected!

Shared digital imaging revolutionizing health care delivery

London, ON - The Thames Valley pilot phase of the Southwest Ontario Digital Imaging Network project is celebrating the completion of its second milestone in creating a shared digital imaging network for diagnostic images - London Health Sciences Centre is now fully digital! This project is a first for Ontario, and the most extensive shared-service model in Canada.

The pilot phase of this project involves the eight Thames Valley Hospital Planning Partnership Hospitals (TVHPP). With London Health Sciences Centre completing their digital imaging implementation, and with St. Joseph's Health Care in London already being digital, these two hospitals can now share medical images. By December 2005 all the TVHPP hospitals will be sharing digital medical images.

The eight TVHPP hospitals involved in the pilot phase of the project are: ·

  • Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll;
  • Four Counties Health Services in Newbury;
  • London Health Sciences Centre;
  • St. Joseph's Health Care, London;
  • St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital;
  • Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital;
  • Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital;
  • Woodstock General Hospital.

    Digital images are filmless - much like a digital camera. This filmless system enables radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians, at any one of the facilities in the pilot project, to view patients' test images (such as X-Rays and MRIs ) on a computer screen, instead of shipping imaging films from location to location.

Special guests at the April 21 event include: Richard Alvaraz, President and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, John McKinley, Executive Director of Business Services for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Chris Bentley, Minister of Labour and London West MPP, and Anne Marie DeCicco, Mayor of London.
