London Recruits Leader in Personalized Medicine From the United States

London, ON – What if your doctor could use DNA analysis to ensure that they prescribe the right medications, in the right amounts at the right time for each person they see? Imagine fewer side-effects, fewer adverse drug reactions or toxicity problems and customized drug treatment options that are safe and effective for each and every person and you will begin to understand the benefits of Dr. Richard Kim’s research in personalized medicine, also called “pharmacogenomics.”

Dr. Kim, a Canadian physician-scientist and leading researcher in the field of personalized medicine, has decided to relocate his lab and his research team from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, in Nashville, Tennessee to London, Ontario.

With appointments at London Health Sciences Centre, Lawson Health Research Institute and Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario, Dr. Kim will be Clinical Pharmacologist, Chair/Chief Division of Clinical Pharmacology, and Professor of Medicine.

He will also be the inaugural Medical Director of the new Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU) at the Legacy Research Building at University Hospital, which is one of the first centres of its kind in Canada for bench to bedside research and clinical trials. “What makes this so exciting is that there are a number of truly outstanding scientists, both at the basic and clinical levels in London, who can make things happen. By pooling equipment and people in one core facility we will optimize resources, ensuring patients receive the latest and greatest care,” said Dr. Kim.

Dr. Kim and his team were formally welcomed to London at a press conference this morning at University Hospital, hosted by London Health Sciences Centre, Lawson and Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
