New Visiting Guidelines to Meet Patient Needs

(LONDON, Ontario) –New visiting guidelines are in effect at London Health Sciences Centre. Optimal visiting times will now be based on the condition, care needs and expressed wishes of each patient. This means that visiting times may vary between patients.

“London Health Sciences Centre is committed to working with patients and families to provide compassionate high-quality care,” says Sandra Letton, Integrated Vice President, Nursing and Allied Health, and Chief Nursing Executive. “We believe it is important for patients to experience the support of family and friends and also ensure a safe, caring and effective work environment for staff and physicians.”

Patient care areas such as Children’s Hospital and Palliative Care have always maintained visiting guidelines to reflect the care needs and wishes of their patients. More restrictive visiting hours had been put in place during SARS in 2003. We received many requests from patients and families for a return to less restrictive visiting hours.

“We are committed to being patient and family centred at London Health Sciences Centre. We recognize that the presence of family and friends during hospitalization helps relieve the anxiety and increase the comfort of patients as well as their family members,” says Letton.

VISITING GUIDELINES

  • Visiting is based on the condition, care needs, and expressed wishes of each patient in the unit.

  • For this reason, visiting times may vary between patients and units. We ask patients or visitors to check with unit staff about optimal visiting times.

  • As well, visiting may be interrupted to provide appropriate patient care.

  • Visiting will be restricted when we need to protect the privacy rights of other patients or maintain safety and security.

  • Family members supporting a patient between the overnight hours of 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. are asked to remain in the patient’s room and advise unit staff when coming to and leaving the unit.
