London Regional Cancer Program’s Neuro-Endocrine program to see reduced patient volumes

(LONDON, Ontario) –London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) at London Health Sciences Centre announced today its Neuro-Endocrine program will be reducing its patient volumes.

This highly-specialized program is one of two of its kind in Canada, and provides treatment for cancers of the endocrine glands - the glands responsible for secreting hormones directly into the blood. Typically, LRCP’s Neuro-Endocrine program sees between 80 and 100 patients per year.

The decision to see a reduced number of patients was made after the recent death of a staff member and unforeseen medical leave by another member of the highly-specialized, four-person Neuro-Endocrine staff. Unfortunately, these events have severely compromised the program’s ability to continue seeing its full compliment of patients

As such, the Neuro-Endocrine program will suspend acceptance of patients referred from outside its primary catchment area of responsibility, the South West region of Ontario, until the team’s staffing challenges can be resolved.

“We recognize this is a difficult situation for patients and their families,” said LRCP Vice President, Brian Orr. “Our primary concern is patient care and we want to assure our current patients that their care will continue uninterrupted.”

The program will continue to honour commitments to its current patients, and continue to accept referral patients from within the South West region.
