For Immediate Release:
December 31, 2010
LONDON, Ontario - London Health Sciences Centre and the Middlesex London Health Unit reported an outbreak of Influenza on a wing at London Health Sciences Centre’s Victoria Hospital. This outbreak was declared because of one confirmed case of Influenza A and three additional symptomatic patients. It is suspected that the most likely transmission route is from patients' visitors.
Outbreak measures were put in place December 30, 2010, which included restricting staff flow in and out of the wing. Further restrictions on visitors have also been implemented. “Occupational Health will follow up with all staff, including physicians who are working in the area of the outbreak. Anyone who has not had their flu vaccine 2 weeks ago or longer will be given Tamiflu before they can work in the outbreak area” said Dr. Michael John, Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control.
“Our primary concern is always the health and well-being of our patients,” said Brian Orr, Regional Vice-President for Cancer Services. “Our dedicated professionals continue to work hard to control the spread of Influenza and we are confident we will soon be able to bring this outbreak status to an end.”
