LONDON, Ontario – Genetic Counselling Awareness Week runs Nov. 22 – 26 and gives London Health Sciences Centre’s nine genetic counsellors an opportunity to bring awareness of their role in medical genetics, cancer genetics, metabolic genetics, cardiology, prenatal fetal development, and newborn screening.
"As a genetic counsellor, I have the privilege of helping LHSC patients make informed decisions about their genetic health,” said Carla Campagnolo, genetic counsellor, LHSC. “I provide care to families by giving information about genetic conditions and inheritance patterns, discussing testing options, helping to understand test results, and providing support throughout the process.”
The Medical Genetics team including genetic counselors, social workers, dieticians, physicians and researchers, provide education to help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of how their genes contribute to disease.
"Education is key," explains Dr. Prasad, medical geneticist and director of the Metabolic Clinic in the Medical Genetics Program at Children's Hospital, LHSC. "We have to enable our patients and families with the right information and the tools to learn more, because in the end they are the ones living every day with these conditions."
Established in the late 1970s, LHSC’s Medical Genetics Program is home to 21 physicians, staff and researchers. The program offers a wide range of testing, treatment and education to more than 5,000 patients each year. The Children’s Health Foundation is gratefully acknowledged for their generous support of the program.
