For clients identifying as immigrant or refugee, from childhood to adulthood, experiencing moderate to severe mental health concerns, which are influenced by a cultural component. Clients can access service for themselves or for their family members if needed.

The Transcultural Mental Health Consultation Service is a multidisciplinary team trained to provide family-centred mental health services in a manner that is comprehensive, integrated, and where cultural factors influence the client’s or family’s presentation and service needs. At present, the catchment area for service is the London/Middlesex community.
The Transcultural Mental Health Consultation Service would include an initial assessment, potential short-term culturally-informed interventions with community collaboration and consultation for best client support and understanding.
Consultation would also be available to service providers and organizations interested in a culturally-informed perspective regarding engagement with specific client groups or program planning.
The Transcultural Mental Health Consultation Service consists of four part-time staff including: a psychiatrist, a social worker, and two clinical counsellors. The team works closely with community partners who are either previously connected to the client/family or have recently been connected to the client/family as a support in their journey. This may include community mental health agencies, settlement services, social services, school services, in addition to others.

Referrals DO NOT need to go through Coordinated Intake.
Eligibility will be based on information provided on the form. If eligible, an appointment for an initial consultation will be scheduled. If ineligible, the referred client/family will be notified and provided with alternative service options.

The personal information collected is under the authority of the Health Protection and Promotion Act and applicable privacy legislation. This information will be used to refer the client to this specialized mental health service. We will keep this information private. The Transcultural Mental Health Consultation Service is working with the London community to provide bidirectional educational opportunities to staff at London Health Sciences Centre, as well as to community agencies looking to further their transcultural mental health knowledge. Please contact us to learn more.
There are education opportunities available to students and staff in health sciences at LHSC including the field of medicine, social work and occupational therapy.
The Transcultural Mental Health Consultation Service is a two year pilot project; ongoing program evaluation and efficacy studies are being conducted to ensure quality mental health service and good fit with the London/Middlesex community need.
