Dr. Robert McGregor Lindsay, Executive Director, Home Hemodialysis Program, LHSC, was awarded the 2015 International Society for Hemodialysis Belding H. Scribner Trail Blazer Award in Hemodialysis, during the Annual Dialysis Conference in New Orleans this past January.
The Annual Dialysis Conference is one of the most important annual meetings in the world for all forms of dialysis, attracting over 1,300 participants from more than 40 countries. Each year, the organizers of the Annual Dialysis Conference hand-out special memorial awards for advocates of quality dialysis care.
“This award is a great honour as Dr. Belding Scribner was an inspiration to me,” says Dr. Lindsay. “He is considered the father of dialysis, and I am privileged to be recognized for contributing the advancement of hemodialysis.”
Dr. Lindsay is internationally recognized for his research to improve the quality of hemodialysis delivered to patients with end-stage renal disease. For 40 years, he has consistently been a leader in the field, advancing world knowledge and improving the longevity and quality of life of people who rely on hemodialysis to replace the lost function of their kidneys.
As a trail blazer, Dr. Lindsay’s research has focused on more frequent dialysis for shorter durations to increase patient survival and improve quality of life. He was also part of team that studied the patient benefits of overnight hemodialysis treatments.
“Clinical advancement comes from research. Without research there is no change,” says Dr. Lindsay. “I am proud that my research has allowed me to improve the care and the quality of life of my patients.”
