LHSC meets its blood donation goal

January 20, 2017

Last year was significant for LHSC’s Partners for Life initiative with Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Not only did 23 new Partners for Life members roll up their sleeves to donate, but staff, physicians, and volunteers succeeded in meeting LHSC’s goal of contributing 500 units of blood for the year with a total of 502 units collected!

“This Partners for Life figure is a significant achievement,” says Murray Glendining, LHSC’s President and CEO. “I am grateful to all those who donated. Their support for this vital community service is one more way LHSC continues to provide high-quality care for our patients.”

CBS has indicated that in 2017 there is a strong need for new donors. Currently, they rely on existing donors to donate more frequently in order to meet their collection targets. But this approach is not sustainable as in many cases these existing donors may no longer be able to donate due to changes in health or life circumstances may prevent them from donating as often. While one in two Canadians are eligible to donate, only one in 60 actually does, meaning four per cent of Canadians sustain the blood system for all Canadians.

To assist CBS in meeting this growing need, LHSC has increased our donation goal for 2017 to 525 units of blood.

“We are grateful to LHSC staff, physicians and volunteers who currently donate, and we would like to encourage new donors, as one in two Canadians will either need blood or know someone who will at some point in their lives,” says Marisa Gatfield, Canadian Blood Services Territory Manager for London.

“As the region’s highest user of blood product, LHSC has an imperative to help maintain a stable blood supply,” says Glendining.

Thank you for supporting LHSC’s Partners for Life initiative – thank you for giving life!
