Where can I go for medical care during the holidays when it's not an emergency?

December 23, 2015

During the holiday period, London Health Sciences Centre’s Emergency Departments (EDs) often experience high levels of patient activity. In these peak times we will continue to deliver high quality care to all patients; however those who do not require emergency care for life-threatening illnesses or injuries will face potentially long wait times, as the most critically ill patients will be seen first.

The Emergency Departments at LHSC do not provide continuing care for chronic conditions, assessment of long-term care residents, or prescription refills, including those for narcotics.

If you have a medical emergency please phone 911, or go directly to your nearest Emergency Department. For those with non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, we ask you to consider the following options before coming to the ED:

  • Contact your family doctor or a walk-in clinic for flu or flu-like symptoms – many family physicians provide various options for after-hours care
  • Go to St. Joseph’s Hospital Urgent Care Centre for treatment of non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that can’t wait but are unlikely to require a hospital admission. This includes such health issues as cuts that need stitches, sprains, strains, broken bones, earaches, fevers, coughs, colds, nausea, vomiting, flu-like symptoms, eye problems and minor abdominal pain. Please note that the Urgent Care Centre does not provide continuing care for chronic conditions, assessment of long-term care residents, or prescription refills, including those for narcotics. The Urgent Care Centre is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends and holidays
  • For health advice and general information 24 hours a day, seven days a week contact Telehealth Ontario 1-866-797-0000
  • For a more robust listing of non-emergency resources available to you over the holiday season (medical care, pharmacies and mental health crisis lines), please visit the SouthWest healthline
