Westmount Kidney Care Centre celebrates its fifth anniversary

November 29, 2017

When the Kidney Care Centre at Westmount opened its doors in November 2012, it brought 10 years of planning, advocacy and fundraising to fruition. A sunrise ceremony was held a few weeks before the opening, to turn the clinic into a welcoming space.

“Our goal at the outset was to provide care in a community setting, as close to home as possible, to help create an environment of wellness and enhance the patient experience,” says Janice McCallum, Director of Renal Services  at LHSC and the Ontario Renal Network.

It was in this context that the clinic marked its fifth anniversary with patients, families, team members and former staff and supporters gathered to mark the event.

“At the time we brought together six units from four hospital sites, and it was my dream that they would become an integrated and cohesive group. The spirit of togetherness that has come about is the biggest achievement for me so far,” says McCallum.

More than 100 staff and physicians, and 1,200 patients now call the Kidney Care Centre home.

The centre provides services and resources such as:

  • Hemodialysis treatment for chronic dialysis patients on an outpatient basis;
  • Peritoneal and home hemodialysis assessment, training and maintenance;
  • Chronic kidney disease clinics and health education;
  • Aboriginal resource room containing Aboriginal medicines, resource information about Aboriginal cultures, as well as Aboriginal arts and crafts.

The Kidney Care Centre is also the support centre for the regional satellite dialysis units.
