June 14, 2013
On June 13, Brandon Prust, Prusty4Kids supporters, Children's Health Foundation and members of Children's Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre came together to celebrate the official launch of Kids Kicking Cancer at Children's Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.
Brandon Prust (right) of the NHL Montreal Canadiens received his own “Kids Kicking Cancer” uniform at the launch of this new program at LHSC’s Children’s Hospital. Brandon’s charity – Prusty4Kids – made this program possible at Children’s Hospital. It is already helping patients like Seth Coulter, Liam Hepburn (12) and Kiara Szabo (10) who demonstrated some of the techniques at the launch on June 13.
Thanks to the wonderful supporters of the inaugural Prusty4Kids Charity Golf Tournament at Redtail Golf Course on August 2, 2012, Children’s Hospital is the very first children's hospital in Canada to bring Kids Kicking Cancer to their young cancer patients.
Kids Kicking Cancer gives children, youth and their families from across southwestern Ontario and parts of northern Ontario the power to take back control of their lives and battle cancer. Through hands-on martial arts training and deep breathing techniques, Kids Kicking Cancer gives children the tools they need to build confidence and strength as they battle cancer with their team at Children’s.
“Children's Hospital depends on – and is very grateful for – the support it receives from members of our community and region,” says Bonnie Adamson, LHSC President and CEO. “In keeping with our family‑centred approach to health care and our commitment to continuous improvements in the quality of care we provide our patients, we are very grateful to Brandon Prust, his family, close friend Dave Moore, and all of our martial arts volunteers under the guidance of Rabbi Goldbert for making this program possible.”
The Kids Kicking Cancer Program provides weekly classes for children – both inpatient and outpatient – in the mind-body techniques found in the martial arts. The goal of Kids Kicking Cancer is to ease the pain of sick children while empower them them to heal physically, spiritually and emotionally. It will emphasize relaxation and mental imagery, and skill each student according to his or her capabilities to engage in breathing, meditation, and active karate exercises. Parents, siblings and health-care providers will also be able to receive instruction in these methods.
Thank you for raising hope and for making Kids Kicking Cancer come to life at Children’s!
