To continue helping improve organ and tissue donation rates and awareness, London Health Sciences Centre is proud to once again partner with the Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) for a workplace registration drive during National Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness Week, April 19-25.
Each year, the third week in April marks National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week. It is a time to remind Canadians of the critical need for organ and tissue donations that can help the over 4,500 people waiting for a life-saving transplant in Canada today. In Ontario alone, up to 1,500 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Every three days, one of them dies waiting.
The research, clinical innovation and expertise of the staff and physicians of LHSC’s Multi-Organ Transplant Program have been saving lives and improving patient outcomes for more than 30 years. Their work would not be possible without the compassion of organ donors and their families.
One organ donor can save up to eight lives, and LHSC is fortunate that the London region has one of the highest donation rates across Canada. But if we are to continue helping our patients, we must continue to improve those rates.
There’s a good chance you already support this cause – more than 85% of Ontarians are in favour of organ donation. However, only one in four Ontarians have registered their consent to donate. Many people mistakenly believe they are registered because they previously signed a paper donor card. Please check to be sure you are registered.
Please also consider using this opportunity to discuss organ and tissue donation with your family and share our campaign page with them. When given evidence of a loved one’s decision to donate, families almost always honour this decision. If there is no evidence of the decision, consent falls to 50 per cent – demonstrating just how vital it is to share your decision with your family.
At LHSC we care for the residents of London and the region every day. By registering your consent to donate and encouraging your loved ones to do the same, you are furthering our commitment to providing the best possible outcomes for our patients. All you need to participate is your health card.
