London Health Research Day features best in health research

April 15, 2015

Now in its fourth year, London Health Research Day is the largest health research day of its kind in Ontario. On April 1, approximately 400 young researchers from Lawson Health Research Institute and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University gathered to showcase their work in either poster or platform presentations.

Student research is answering important and timely questions such as if biomarkers can be used to provide an objective diagnosis of concussion, if mice models can be used to test and accelerate drug screening for Alzheimer’s Disease, if we can identify new ways to slow the progression of osteoarthritis, and if a new theory is a good predictor of suicide in older adults. In all, the research spans all areas of health research including children’s health, aging, biomedical imaging, surgical innovation, cancer and mental health.

“It’s important to highlight our strength in working collaboratively here in London. It’s how we expand our base of knowledge and translate that knowledge into better patient care,” says Dr. David Hill, Scientific Director at Lawson Health Research Institute.

This year offered another exciting speaker as part of The Lucille & Norton Wolf Health Research Lecture Series. Dr. Nathan Wolfe, a virologist who has spent much of his career coming up with ways to combat pandemics, gave a talk entitled “Before it Strikes: Viral Forecasting for Pandemic Prevention.”

As always the main highlight of the day was seeing the exciting and diverse research projects underway by students, trainees and postdoctoral scholars. The participants represented labs at Lawson, Western, Robarts, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London.
