On November 15, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) was pleased to help launch a new book, So Long South Street – A Photographic History of Victoria Hospital, by Ryan Craven with photos by Matthew Trueman. The book features both historical text and photographs, and photographs that Matthew was able to take during the demolition process of the hospital site.
The launch event and book signing was attended by LHSC staff, members of the auxiliary and the general public, where Ryan and Matthew spoke to the importance of the former hospital site to the city of London. The book offers the opportunity for Londoners to reminisce and pay tribute to the legacy of care that has been built at LHSC – a legacy that began at South Street Hospital in the late 1830’s.
“South Street Hospital was more than a health care facility. It was a symbol of our city,” said author Ryan Craven. “Its grand buildings represented our community's progress and compassion. Matt's photos of the demolition captured the grace and beauty South Street Hospital maintained even to her last days. This book is meant to honour the role the hospital has played in our community and serve as a memento for all the nurses, doctors and support staff who brought it to life.”
The book is available for purchase from all LHSC gift shops at University and Victoria Hospitals. A portion of the proceeds from books sold at LHSC support the auxiliary, which in turn benefits the hospital. It can also be found in local London booksellers such as Oxford Book Shop, Attic Books and Brown & Dickson.
Photographer Matthew Trueman is also selling prints of the So Long South Street photos, customizable to your size specifications. Available images can be found on Matthew’s website. For more information on costs and ordering process, please contact Matthew directly.
“The effort and care Ryan and Matthew have put into capturing the history of South Street Hospital through this book is most appreciated and will allow our community to revisit special memories of the building for years to come,” said Murray Glendining, President and CEO of LHSC. “We cannot thank them enough for this wonderful tribute.”
