London Health Sciences Centre’s Physiotherapy Services asked staff to Move for Movember in support of Movember Canada and to raise awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Staff responded to the 30 day fitness challenge with a total of 77,160 minutes or 1,286 activity hours.
“We know that one in four adults aren’t active enough and we know that physical activity can reduce workplace injuries and the risk of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers,” says Renee Hand, Physiotherapist Assistant, LHSC, and Movember London committee member. “Move for Movember was a great way for Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to get involved in Movember activities and improve our physical health.”
Participating LHSC teams included Oncology, Orthopaedics, Sub Acute Medicine Unit (SAMU), Quality, Patient Safety & Patient Experience, Nephrology, C5 inpatients, and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy. Members of Physiotherapy Services acted as team captains on all the teams, but one, to provide support and calculate the activity times of other members.
Each individual participant tracked their activity minutes and earned one point for every 30 minutes of activity. Departments competed in teams of approximately ten individuals. Ultimately, it was the Quality, Patient Safety & Patient Experience department who rose highest to the fitness challenge and led LHSC with 341 hours of physical activity. Their reward: a trophy and bragging rights.
“Move for Movember provided a no stress fitness challenge that encouraged participants to be accountable and mindful about their physical activity,” explains Susan Rosato, Fitness Nurse, LHSC. “Our daily actions matter and the habits formed over a 30 day challenge can last a lifetime.”
Participants were able to track activity minutes gained by participating in LHSC Fitness Program classes or activities completed on their own. LHSC’s Fitness Program is a unique workplace wellness offering featuring a wide variety of options that include over 90 fitness classes per week, group led walking programs, monthly grocery store tours and the very popular “we come to you” stretching sessions . All programs are 30 minutes in length and free for employees.
“All of our participants are ahead of the curve in preparing for their New Year fitness resolutions,” adds Rosato.
