In December 2016, Stella Stenning, a sweet and loving three year old, was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It was a shocking diagnosis since her parents, Seri and Dub, initially thought Stella had a stubborn cold.
Stella received treatment at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) for over four months. During this time Stella received three rounds of intense chemotherapy along with multiple blood transfusions before being transferred to SickKids in Toronto for a bone marrow transplant.
Blood and blood products are a critical part of everyday medical care including cancer treatments, major surgeries, medical procedures, and managing disease. Each year LHSC uses almost 21,500 units of red blood cells, 4,000 units of plasma, and 4,400 bags of platelets to care for patients. Having a stable blood supply is a key factor in being able to care for these patients.
As a member of the Partners for Life program, LHSC plays an important role in increasing awareness of the need for blood and encourages our staff, physicians and volunteers to make a strong and lasting commitment to blood donation.
Today, Stella is a cancer survivor. She will be starting school in the fall, and is getting back into a regular routine away from the hospital and the need for ongoing treatment. Stella and her family continue to commend and support the care providers who helped Stella along her journey, and they encourage you to donate through Canadian Blood Services.
“It’s extremely important to donate blood. Without blood donors Stella wouldn’t even have the chance to fight,” says Seri Stenning.
In May and June, join LHSC’s Blood Donor Challenge by registering online as a Partners for Life member and making a donor appointment during those months. Any LHSC Partners for Life member who attends a blood donation appointment (regardless of donation completion) during the months of May and June will be entered to win an incredible swag bag full of LHSC branded items.
