Regional Patient Transfers

Background:
The increasing inability of ambulance services to respond in a timely manner to non-emergency patient transfers is having a significant impact on health care delivery in Southwestern Ontario in the following ways:

  • Patients are often unable to move out of beds to a discharge destination in a timely manner thus blocking a bed for a potentially sick patient
  • Patients are often unable to get to another site for necessary medical tests and / or procedures on time thus either missing their appointment or having to wait

Health care delivery services in Southwestern Ontario are willing to work in partnership to pilot specific integration initiatives to develop ways in which non-emergency patient transfer services can be improved to improve access to care in SWO.
