Medical Physicists

The Physics team plays an integral role in the radiation treatment of cancer patients. These professionals are trained in post-graduate Medical Physics programs, followed by a two year residency in a clinical setting.

Medical Physicists' primary responsibility is to ensure that safe and effective radiation therapy is delivered to the patient, while keeping the staff and the public safe as well. This requires many considerations and our clinical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Quality Assurance
    • CT-Simulator for Radiation Therapy Planning
    • Linear Accelerators for External Beam Radiation Therapy
    • Treatment Plans

  • Commissioning and Maintenance
    • Equipment, including:
      • Linear Accelerators
      • Simulators and CT-Simulators
    • Software, including:
      • Treatment Planning Software
       
  • Treatment Planning
    • Oversee the Treatment Planning (Dosimetry) Department
    • Dosimetric Measurement for Patient Dose Monitoring
  •  
  • Radiation Safety
    • Radiation Dose Monitoring for Staff and the Public
    • Design of Bunkers
      • to maintain safe radiation levels outside treatment areas
    • Licensing and Adherence to Federal and Provincial Legislation
    • Education
     
  • Research
    • Implementation of New Techniques and Procedures
    • Evaluation of On-Going Programs
    • Development of New Ideas for Radiation Therapy Treatments
