Radiation Therapists are essential members of the health care team who deliver prescribed ionizing radiation to patients for the purpose of cure or symptom relief. Encompassing skills in patient care, treatment planning, oncology and treatment delivery, these professionals provide the highest quality care for patients and their families.
Radiation therapists use focused beams of radiation to destroy tumours, while minimizing harm to healthy tissues. Alternatively, treatment may involve placing radioactive sources directly into the patient's body.
Each radiation therapist is a member of the College of Medical Radiation Technologists of Ontario, and must follow the Standards of Practice set out by this legislated organization. Radiation therapists also have the opportunity for membership in the provincial and national professional associations.
LRCP currently employs more than 60 radiation therapists from all over the world who provide planning and treatment for the residents of Southwestern Ontario.
Equipment & Procedures
The Radiation Therapy area consists of ten treatment units: eight of which are linear accelerators, one Tomotherapy machine, and one superficial unit. There are two CT Simulators, one conventional Simulator, and a Brachytherapy suite. LRCP also has acceses to the Magnetic Resonance Suite of LHSC for Simulation purposes.
Notable treatment procedures routinely offered include Intensity Modulation, Stereotactic Body, Total Body, and Respiratory gating. Most treatments are delivered using image guidance. Brachytherapy is routinely performed for prostate and gynecological cancers. Skin cancer is also treated with Brachytherapy, as well as Photodynamic Therapy.
