Why Moist Wound Healing?

Moist wound healing has been the evidence based /best practice approach since Dr. George Winter first published his studies in 1962.

Moist wound healing:
* Providing a balance is essential for necessary healing

• Maintains optimal temperature
• Decreases infection potential
• Decreases patient pain at dressing change
• Decreases trauma to the fragile granulating tissue of the wound bed
• Moist = moist like your eyeball

A. Adding moisture to a dry wound

• Use a hydrogel to support autolytic debridement

B. Drying a wet wound

• Hydrofibre or calcium alginates can be used.  Such a dressing goes on dry, and soaks up exudate
• A foam dressing can be used to absorb drainage.  It is useful because it can be left on up to seven days and holds significant amount of drainage.
