LHSC's Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Program is a 6-month program that operates on a physician referral basis. Men and women with known heart disease, for example those who have had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty or heart surgery, work with our professional staff to create and follow an individualized program. If you have recently experienced a heart event, you are a good candidate for cardiac rehabilitation. It is a safe and effective way to overcome some of the physical complications of heart disease, limit your risk of developing more heart trouble, assist your return to an active social or work schedule, and improve your psychological well-being. Simply print the referral form and ask your physician to refer you to LHSC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Program. There is no cost to attend this program.
Following referral to the program, all of our patients undergo medical evaluation, including exercise stress testing. This provides information about your physical abilities, medical limitations, other conditions you may have, as well as your psychosocial needs. The cardiac rehabilitation team will use this information to tailor the program to meet your individual needs, and ensure that it is safe and effective for you. We offer participants an exercise program with general risk factor education and counseling as needed in nutrition, psychological and behavioural issues, smoking cessation, or medications. Recognizing that women are under-represented in cardiac rehabilitation programs, CRSP addresses the unique needs and issues of the female cardiac population. For more information about the program, refer to our program brochure.
Entering the program is an important step towards improved heart health. We look forward to assisting all of our patients along this road to recovery.
