Palliative and end of life care for children and youth
We always have hope to save every child but, in reality, sometimes that is not always possible. Our hope is to make their last days more comfortable. Our philosophy of care is about listening, advocating, supporting, caring and remembering.
Paediatric palliative care enhances the quality of life for children and their families, who are living with life-threatening or life-limiting illness or disease. During the most powerful, painful and personal times in their lives, we have an opportunity to make a difference. We believe it is important to remember that sometimes it is the little things that count the most.
Our Program
At Children’s Hospital, our caregivers take a holistic approach to palliative care that embraces physical, emotional, social and spiritual elements. Our goal is to help patients and their families focus on living each day to its fullest, rather than on waiting for death to occur.
Our palliative care program provides support to our patients and families through the following:
- Pain and symptom assessment and management
- Connections to community palliative care agencies and services
- Palliative care resources
- Sibling and Parent Bereavement Groups
- Memory Boxes, Books and Cards
- Annual Memorial Services
Our Team
The paediatric palliative care team is an interdisciplinary group of caregivers with the expertise to meet the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of our patients and their family. The team includes a physician, nurse, social worker, child life therapist and spiritual advisor.
