Our Service

Psychology services at the Children's Hospital are provided by Psychologists, Psychological Associate, a Psychometrist, Residents and students. All service providers have graduate level training in Psychology. Psychologists and Psychological Associates are registered members of the College of Psychologists of Ontario and provide supervision to non-registered staff.

Psychology staff are members of the following treatment teams: Diabetes, Oncology, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), and Neurology. Consultation is available to patients of other paediatric services by referral, including the Inpatient Units, the Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU), Genetics / Metabolics, Neurosurgery, the Cystic Fibrosis Team and Gastroenterology (including the Encopresis Clinic).

Research Areas include: psychological and neuropsychological late effects of survivors of childhood cancer; social skills development in children with cancer; quality of life in children with brain tumors at end of life; and neuropsychological sequelae in children with acquired brain injuries

What to Expect on Your Visit with Us

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Neuropsychological assessments are available for children with known central nervous system involvement and may include the assessment of intellectual function, language, problem solving, attention, memory, executive functioning, and academic skills as well as behavioural and emotional functioning.
  • Neuropsychological results are used to monitor the effects of brain injury or medical treatment (e.g., neurosurgery, cranial radiation). Results also provide information on a child's strengths and weaknesses to assist with academic, vocational and rehabilitation planning.
  • Psychological assessments are available for children who are experiencing cognitive, emotional, and behavioural symptoms related to the child's medical condition and adjustment to illness.
  • Assessment of intellectual functioning may be available where functioning impacts on their medical care or if it results from a change in the medical condition.
  • Pain assessments are available for children with acute, recurrent or chronic pain.
  • Parental assessments are also available for those experiencing significant psychological reactions as a result of their child's illness.

Intervention

  • Treatment of psychological, cognitive, behavioural and emotional problems related to issues such as adjustment to illness, treatment adherence, and stresses related to a medical condition.
  • Pain management.
  • Development of home/hospital management programs for children with behaviour problems related to the child's medical condition or treatment regime.
  • Individual therapy for parents and/or siblings regarding a child's medical condition; treatment of emotional or behavioural symptoms.
  • Group Bereavement Therapy for children and youth coping with the death of a sibling.

Consultation

  • Consultation to hospital health care professionals regarding a child's neuropsychological, psychological, cognitive, behavioural, and emotional problems that are affecting the child's health care regime or exacerbating medical conditions.
  • Education of staff and students about neuropsychological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural issues that impact children with chronic illness and their families.
  • Consultation and liaison to help schools and agencies address the child's needs in the community.
