What to Expect of Your Visit with a Social Worker
Internship, Education and Research
The occurrence of illness inevitably disrupts personal and family lifestyles. Hospitalization also entails changes that often causes people significant distress.
At Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, Social Workers are available to assist patients and their families with any difficulties that may result from a hospitalization or adjustment to a medical condition.
Social Workers are members of the health care team, trained in providing individual, couple, family and group therapy. All Social Workers have a Master of Social Work degree and are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.Social Workers seek to understand all patients in relation to their current health crisis, personal and family needs, social supports and community ties.

Social Workers provide assessments, counseling, discharge planning services, information and education. People talk to social work when they are concerned about the following:
- Adjustment to illness and treatment
- Relationship and family issues
- Stress and conflict
- Grief and loss
- End of life care issues
- Parenting issues
- Discharge planning, making connections to hospital and community-based resources, and home supports
- Communication needs and issues with the health care team
- Issues related to physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect.

Social workers are also an integral part of the educational sessions and ongoing teaching offered through Children's Hospital for allied healthcare professionals; nursing and medical staff and the community.
