What is an EMG Test?

Electromyography (EMG) is a general term meaning, "the recording of the electrical activity of nerve and muscle". For more information view our EMG informational pamphlet.

Why is an EMG test ordered?

EMG is a diagnostic test used to assess the function and health of nerves and muscles.   You may be sent for an EMG test if you are experiencing numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain.   The test may take from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on what your doctor has ordered.  

EMG should not be confused with an EEG (ElectroEncephaloGram) test, which records the electrical activity from different parts of the brain.
