For six weeks following surgery, you will not be allowed to drive a car. As a result, it is very important for you to have transportation arranged to take you to and from the hospital for your surgery and also to appointments with your surgeon, family physician and physiotherapist.
If you are going to another hospital or a long-term care facility, transportation will be arranged for you.
If you are going to a retirement home or private residence, you are responsible for arranging and paying for your transportation home. Pick up is recommended within 2 - 4 hours of your discharge notice.
Your options include:
Friends or Family Member
|
Taxi
|
Wheelchair Taxi
|
Stretcher Transportation
|
Please note some third party insurance companies may reimburse you either in part or in full for transportation costs. Check your insurance company for details.
At London Health Sciences Centre, we provide acute medical care to more than 650,000 patients each year.
By planning your ride home for as close to your discharge time as possible, you help us to be able to provide medical care to more patients in need.
Discharges can occur at anytime, 7 days a week. We ask that you arrange your pick-up from the hospital within 2 - 4 hours of being discharged. Please speak with your nurse if you have any questions or concerns about planning your ride home.
After surgery you may qualify for an Accessible Parking Permit which will allow you to park in a designated accessible parking space. Please visit the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario for more information.
If you are unable to have family or friends drive you after surgery, there are services available in the community that can assist with transport to appointments. Please visit thehealthline.ca for a list of available transportation services in London and area. For more information, please call your local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC).
Please note that London Transit specialized transit services, including Paratransit, require you to be a registered customer. Please visit London Transit for more information.
