Surgery

Surgery is the oldest approach to treating cancer. It can also be the most successful way to treat the disease. If it is possible to ‘cut it out’ safely and there is no cancer left behind, you may be cured.

The physician who performs surgeries is called a surgeon. A surgeon will also perform biopsies. A biopsy is when cells or tissues are removed from the body and then examined to help diagnose your condition.

There are two key questions that need to be answered when deciding if surgery is the right thing to do:

  • Is the tumour in one place?
  • Can the tumour be removed without damaging vital organs or causing major functioning problems?

Once a cancer spreads, surgery may not be appropriate or it might be performed along with another treatment option.
