What is Cancer?

Cancer is the term applied to a group of more than 100 diseases. In each of these diseases, abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled manner, which disturb or damage the normal cells in the body. These abnormal cells are called a tumour.

There are two main types of tumours:

  • Malignant tumours are cancers, which can invade and destroy healthy cells in any part of the body.
  • Benign tumours are growths that do not spread to other parts of the body.

Tumours are treated by radiation and chemotherapy. Your treatment plan can include one, or both of these therapies.

LRCP treats all types of cancers. Cancers are divided into groups or ‘disease sites.’ Doctors, nurses, and other professional staff are assigned to a disease site team. These teams specialize in caring for and treating people with specific cancers and benign tumours.
