Services We Provide

Below is a list of services with information on how they are accessed. Some non-emergent services require a doctor’s referral. If you do not have a regular family physician, a referral can be made through a walk-in clinic.

Adult Eating Disorders Service

The Adult Eating Disorders Service (AEDS) is a community based program provided by London Health Sciences Centre and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Middlesex. This service has been developed to meet the needs of adults who require treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. We offer a wide range of programming that includes outpatient, day treatment, residential and relapse prevention services. While our main focus is excellence in patient care, we also highly value the role of education and research for all disciplines. This committed team provides evidence base, compassionate care in partnership with other programs at LHSC and the community.

Adult Inpatient Mental Health Service

The Adult Inpatient Mental Health Program offers stabilization and treatment. The inpatient service offers short term admissions for crisis stabilization, assessments of a variety of mental health spheres and coordination with community resources for follow up treatment and community support after discharge.

Our Adult Inpatient Unit admits patients over 16 years of age who require crisis stabilization and treatment. The Adult Inpatient Mental Health Program is a provider of adult mental health services primarily for Middlesex County. Crisis and short-term inpatient treatment for adults is the focus of this service. The inpatient service provides care to adults who present with mental health difficulties that embrace the entire spectrum of mental illness such as mood disorders, suicidal behaviour, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, substance abuse and acute symptoms of distress related to family or personal crisis, abusive experiences.

Centralized Emergency Psychiatry Service (CEPS)

Emergency assessments are conducted in the emergency room by a team consisting of nurse case managers, psychiatrists, and residents.

We work in collaboration with community partners including mental health agencies and family physicians in an effort to best serve our patients. Family physicians and/or emergency room physicians are involved in the initial stages of the assessment process.

Consultation-Liaison Service

Consultation-Liaison is a specialized service that deals with the overlap of physical health and mental health care issues. The primary mandate is to provide timely psychiatric consultation to adult patients on medical/surgical units across the city. The work is predominantly inpatient-focused, but brief outpatient follow-up is sometimes required.

Centralized Access Point for Adult Ambulatory Mental Health Services

Coordinated Intake is the single point of entry for all community referrals to access outpatient programs provided by London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and the Ambulatory Care Outpatient Services of Specialized Adult London with Regional Mental Health Care-London (RMHC-L).

General Adult Ambulatory Mental Health Services (GAAMHS)

GAAMHS services are designed to serve the following populations:

  • Recently discharged LHSC mental health inpatients;
  • Patients being served by other in-hospital treatment programs;
  • Community patients

Referrals to adult outpatient mental health services at LHSC come through Coordinated Intake; a service that triages all calls and directs patients to the most appropriate service for treatment.

Geriatric Mental Health Program

The Geriatric Mental Health Program consists of an interdisciplinary team designed to provide geriatric psychiatry consultation, assessment and treatment to seniors, 65 years of age and older, and their families living in the community.

Prevention & Early Intervention in Psychoses (PEPP)

PEPP provides early detection, assessment and integrated medical and psychosocial treatment to individuals 16-50 years who have experienced a psychotic disorder for the first time. A modified assertive case management model is used for delivery of care, and assessment and treatment are provided by an interdisciplinary team in the least restrictive environment, preferably the client's choice of environment.

The program promotes strategies likely to improve early recognition of psychosis in the community, improving the chances that individuals receive prompt assessment and treatment. PEPP offers an open referral system with no wait list. For more information see the PEPP website or call 519-667-6777.

Urgent Consultation Service

Mental health assessments are conducted by nurse case managers and psychiatrists. Medical students, residents and other trainees may also be involved in delivery of services, under supervision of the consulting psychiatrist. Provisional diagnoses and recommendations for treatment will be made at the time of assessment, and may include a referral to hospital programs and/or community resources. Summary of consultation is faxed to the referral source on day of assessment with subsequent detailed dictation to follow.

Brief intervention may be warranted/offered through the Urgent Consultation Service, and may involve psychosocial and pharmacotherapeutic measures. However, there may be no further involvement necessary after the initial assessment.
