Good nutrition is an important part of your preparation for transplant, and for recovery from the surgery. While you are waiting for a transplant, you will need to ensure that you are choosing the foods that will enable you to be as well nourished as possible. Achieving a healthy body weight is an important part of this.
Each person’s nutrition needs are different, depending on your own situation. The transplant team includes dietitians who are available to work with you to ensure that you are in the best health possible for the transplant. You may need to either gain weight or lose weight before the transplant, and there may be foods that you should either avoid or include in your diet. The dietitian can help you with this. If you have diabetes, the dietitian will work with you to optimize your blood sugars before transplant as well.
