Information for New Patients

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?

The most common serious neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada. One in a thousand Canadians has MS. The disease attacks the protective myelin sheath that surrounds the nerves of the central nervous system, causing inflammation and loss of myelin. This process interrupts and distorts the natural flow of nerve pulses.

What Happens Now?

After referral to the clinic, you will be seen by a physician or advanced practice nurse involved in the clinic. The initial assessment involves taking a history of your symptoms, followed by a neurological examination. Previous investigations will be reviewed and further investigations may be recommended including: blood tests, lumbar puncture, radiographic imaging (MRI), electrophysiological tests (EMG/VER).

Follow-up visits may be scheduled if necessary to review these investigations with you. Further investigation or treatment/care will be recommended as appropriate.
