Colposcopy

Most women experience some anxiety when they are told they have an abnormal pap test. Remember that most women with an abnormal pap test do not have cancer. Talking to someone you trust might help you deal with your fear.

If your pap test was abnormal or your physician would like a closer examination done on your cervix, vagina, or vulva, your doctor may refer you to the Colposcopy clinic at London Health Sciences Centre. At the clinic, you will be seen by a doctor, a gynaecologist, who has specialized training, and by a nurse. The nurse will be present with you during the examination.

During your visit at the colposcopy clinic, the nurse will talk with you about the test, and you will be asked about your medical history. Your pap smear may be repeated. A vinegar like solution is used to briefly turn any abnormal cells on the cervix from pink to white.

To get a closer look at the cervix, the doctor uses a colposcope, which works like a microscope to magnify the cervix. The colposcope does not enter your body. The doctor will look through the scope at the area that needs to be examined. If any white areas are visible the doctor will use an instrument that will take a small sample of cells. This is called a biopsy. If a biopsy is taken the doctor may use a brown paste an iron based solution that helps diminish the bleeding. This paste may be noticed over the next few days as coffee grounds, or brownish flakes. You may also have light bleeding for up to a week. We suggest that you do not use tampons or have any intercourse until the bleeding stops.

What happens next?

If you require treatment, a date and time will be arranged. Following a treatment we will follow you in the Colposcopy clinic for the next year, at least every six months.

Before your colposcopy visit, approximately one day or 24 hours, we suggest that you do not:

  • Douche
  • Use vaginal medications or creams
  • Use tampons or have sexual intercourse

You may have a bath. If you begin your menstrual period and it is moderate to heavy, please call the clinic. It may be necessary to change your appointment.

After your colposcopy visit:

  • Avoid using tampons for 4 to 5 days or until bleeding stops

Call 519-685-8204 regarding your appointment or if you have any questions. Your health card and two pieces of proper identification are required at every visit. Please allow up to 2 hours for your visit.
