Family Centered Care

The Women’s Program at London Health Sciences Centre focuses on the importance of Family Centered Care. Family Centered Care is a health approach geared towards the relationship between families and health care providers (Institute for Family Centered Care, 2005). The staff within the Women’s Health Care Program understands the importance of the family support system. Even though family system may be enduring stressful and difficult circumstances, it is necessary to recognize the vital role families play in the health and well-being of its members. We gear our care towards meeting the following principles:

  • Respect
  • Strengths
  • Choice
  • Information
  • Support
  • Flexibility
  • Collaboration
  • Empowerment

There is a “City-Wide Family Centered Care Council” to help ensure the principles of Family Centered Care are being upheld in practice. The council was formed in 2001 after members of the LHSC Women’s Care Program attended a conference in Hershey Pennsylvania. The members include RNs and Directors from LHSC, as well as parent members. Meetings are held every 3 months.
