Esophageal Cancer

The purpose of this study is to compare the results of preoperative chemotherapy and radiation followed by surgery to surgery followed by postoperative chemotherapy and radiation based on surgical pathological staging (tumor testing done by a pathologist to determine how advanced the cancer is) in order to treat your esophageal cancer and to see which is better. There have been some early studies that have indicated that surgical resection (surgery to remove the cancer) followed by chemotherapy and radiation is superior and may help to prevent the cancer returning. This study is being done because we do not know which of these two treatments is better.
