Several of our transplant patients have been photographed for an exhibit. This project helps show the success of transplantation – you only need to see the healthy vitality of these people in their everyday lives to realize that transplants work! The project is also a way for us to thank donor families and hospital staff who work so hard to make transplantation a reality for many patients.
During National Organ Donor Awareness Week, the Gallery was displayed in our hospital's lobby. Now the Gallery is displayed in the Transplant Program's foyer, and several hospitals in Ontario are interested in borrowing it. Funding for this project was generously provided by the Windsor Organ Transplant and Cardiac Care Group, a group of transplant recipients and heart patients.
Below, some of our patients share their personal stories:
After being diagnosed with a rare liver disease, Bill Anger was told that he would need both a liver transplant and a heart transplant. Bill's surgery was the third heart-liver transplant performed in Canada. His daughter, Brandi, is glad to "have her dad back". To read more of Bill Anger's story click here.
In November 1992, Katharina was told she had six months left to live after a two-year battle with a chronic liver disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis. But, at the age of 20, life had barely begun. To read more of Katharina Bastian's story click here.
Mattie received his liver transplant on November 12, 1999 when he was 8 months old. His mom donated part of her liver to Mattie, saying she has been privileged to be able to give him life twice. To read more of Mattie and Debbie's story, click here.
Lynne received a double lung transplant in 1994. Shannon Leigh Brady, her daughter, wrote a poem to express her gratitude for the donor's gift of life.To read this, click here.
Patrick Davis tells his story of hope - after being hospitalized more than 100 times, having 22 major surgeries, spending 20 years on dialyis, and enduring the pain and anguish of three failed kidney transplants, he is now enjoying life with a successful kidney transplant, thanks to his wife, Donna, and medical research. Jackie Hannah donated one of her kidneys to her brother, Clive, in January 2000 so that he could return to work without the need for dialysis. To read more of Clive and Jackie's story, click here.
Sarah was only 5 months old when she received her liver-bowel-stomach-pancreas transplant at LHSC, making her the youngest multi-visceral recipient worldwide. Today, she's an active, healthy girl who loves ballet. To read more of Sarah story, click here.
John was 36 years old when he had his first heart attack. Although he recovered, over the years his health deteriorated, and he was told that eventually he would need a heart transplant. He tells the story of his journey from illness to health with the help of his wife, Audrey. To read more of John's story, click here.
