The Transplant Awareness Committee at our hospital was established in 1991. Originally, its goal was to ensure that activities related to organ donor awareness occurred annually during Organ Donor Awareness Week in April. Since then, the group's focus has expanded to increase awareness about organ and tissue donation and transplantation throughout the year by holding special events for both the public and healthcare professionals.
Committee members have included transplant donation specialists, recipient coordinators, transplant nurses, the in-hospital donation coordinator and representatives from the program's administration. Other members include representatives from the Canadian Transplant Association, the Kidney Foundation, and the London Transplant Gift of Life Association.
Funds raised by the Committee have gone towards projects that increase awareness in the community as well as support patient needs in the transplant program.
Various community groups and individuals also organize awareness and fundraising events with proceeds to the transplant program. You can find out more about some of these annual events, ongoing initiatives and historical events.
