You May Need a Blood Transfusion (NS4791) provides information on blood and blood products, benefits, risks and a summary of alternatives. This brochure can be given to patients who may require blood transfusion.

You Are Having an Operation: What are the Alternatives to Blood Transfusion? (NS4859) developed by the Perioperative Blood Conservation Program at LHSC, provides more specific information on alternatives to blood transfusion for patients who will be having a planned operation.

Preoperative Autologous Donation (PAD): Questions and Answers (NS4857) developed by the Perioperative Blood Conservation Program at LHSC, provides information on preoperative autologous blood donation (donating your own blood) for patients who will be having a planned operation.

Erythropoietin (EPO): Questions and Answers (NS4856) developed by the Perioperative Blood Conservation Program at LHSC, provides information on preoperative erythropoietin (medication to increase hemoglobin) for patients who will be having a planned operation.

Iron: Questions and Answers (NS4858) developed by the Perioperative Blood Conservation Program at LHSC, provides information on the role of preoperative iron (including dietary sources and medication) for patients who will be having a planned operation.
