Purpose

This committee has been formed to meet the requirements of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA).  To create review and revise a comprehensive Laboratory Safety Manual that is applicable to sites where LLSG staff are employed.

Scope

• Develop a standardized Laboratory Safety Manual
• Review yearly and revise safety manual as required
• Ensure manual is current with all applicable legislated acts
• Ensure laboratory disciplines/sections meet OLA requirements
• Prepare laboratory disciplines/sections for accreditation activities
• Address staff concerns regarding safety in the workplace
• Communicate important safety issues to the staff

Responsibilities

Chair

• Schedule meetings and arrange meeting locations
• Establish the meeting agenda and distribute to membership 
• Start and end meetings on time
• Report any safety concerns to the committee membership for discussion or action
• Investigate safety concerns
• Distribute minutes to membership and arrange to post on the LLSG website
• Initiate reviews of the Safety Manual and OLA requirements  

Members/alternates

• Ensure representation at all meetings
• Review previous minutes prior to meetings and complete action items as assigned
• Report any safety concerns to the committee membership for discussion or action
• Investigate safety concerns
• As outgoing member, ensure that responsibilities are clear to new members
• If a committee member resigns, ensure there is a replacement member for the area (work with supervisor/coordinator)

Secretary

• Record minutes and forward to Chair for distribution

Frequency of Meetings

• Monthly (Hiatus for July and August)

• Member terms are renewable or until an alternate is appointed
