Lanthanides,
or rare earth metals, comprise a series of 15 metals starting
with Lanthanum (atomic number 57) and ending with Lutetium
(atomic number 71). Lanthanides have been used extensively
in industry, ophthalmic and camera lenses, petroleum cracking,
nuclear reactors, television tubes, and mirrors, to mention
a few applications. Some lanthanides were used in the treatment
of tuberculosis, as anticoagulant agents, and as antinausea
agents, and their potential uses in other areas of medicine
are being explored, including inflammation, arthritis, tumor
scanning, diagnosis of bone disease, and atherosclerosis.
Symptoms of acute lanthanide intoxication include defecation,
writhing, ataxia, sedation, and labored respiration.
