Thallium is widely distributed in the lithosphere and enters the environment primarily from coal burning and cement production.Thallium can easily enter the food chain from the atmosphere and be absorbed by plants. Thallium was used as a rodenticide.  Poisoning occurs from ingestion or absorption through intact skin/mucous membranes.  Used for industrial and environmental monitoring.
