Research Projects and Research Numbers

Research Numbers ("R Numbers")

All research projects conducted at LHSC or SJHC must be approved by the office of the Vice President, Research and Innovation (Dr. David Hill) before samples can be accepted by LLSG.

The Research Office will issue a project number to all approved protocols, in a format R-AA-BBB.
"AA" represents the year and
"BBB" a three digit number.

Projects that are funded from peer-reviewed grants, department money, etc. receive numbers from 1-499, and industry-funded projects receive numbers from 500-999. (For example, a project funded by a peer-reviewed grant in the year 2003 would have the format R-03-001)

When approval is given to a project, LLSG is notified about the project number (the "R" Number) and this number is then logged into the Lab Computer System.

When bringing research samples to the laboratories, keep in mind that:
- the laboratories will not accept samples that do not have a valid R-Number for the project
- the laboratory staff do not issue research numbers. This can only be done through the Research Office.
- grant numbers or cost centre numbers cannot be used in place of the R-Number
