Thermal Transfer Labels for Barcode Labels

We have identified a problem with the barcode labels that are printed using the "Thermal" printing option. When formalin or other solutions containing organic materials leak onto the labels, the print is washed away on the labels making it impossible to identify the source of the specimen. This has the potential to place patients at risk, and/or to make specimens unsuitable for testing.

To correct this potential risk, we need all nursing units to convert their barcode printers to print using "Thermal Transfer" mode. This can be done simply by adding a mylar print ribbon to the printer and replacing the ribbon each time you replace label stock on your printer.

We have posted instructions for installing the ribbons on each of the barcode printer models used in London hospitals on the LLSG website. We are also working with Information Management and Nursing Professional Practice Leaders to train key personnel on each nursing unit to install the ribbons. The same mylar ribbon will work for each of the standard barcode printers used at LHSC, SJHC or any of the Thames Valley hospitals. This ribbon can be ordered through HMMS using catalogue TTR-46 Premium Smear HMMS# 29535 Product number 12084106
