Division of Cytopathology

The Cytopathology division provides diagnosis of exfoliative and fine needle aspiration specimens by standard cytologic methods supplemented by ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and molecular techniques.

The Cytopathology division is committed to providing high quality and timely diagnostic services for our patients at LHSC, St. Joseph’s Health Care London and South Western Ontario regional hospitals. We also provide training for medical students, residents, fellows and cytotechnology students and foster an environment for translational and clinical research.

Cytopathology services include:

  • Providing critical expertise in diagnosis for LHSC, St. Joseph’s Health Care London and regional hospitals reporting over 28,000 samples yearly; both Gynecologic and Non-Gynecologic specimens.
  • Examination of major specimen types including Pap tests, fluids (urine, effusions), exfoliatives (bronchial washings & brushings) and fine needle aspiration biopsies
  • Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) is offered to clinicians performing image guided and complex EBUS and EUS guided FNAB procedures
  • Participating in undergraduate and post graduate teaching for Western University and the Michener Institute; research projects both internal and collaborative
