The Pulmonary Retransplant Registry
What are the different types of pulmonary retransplantation?
Regardless of whether the patient initially underwent a single lung, bilateral lung or heart-lung transplantation, the type of operation chosen for retransplantation will depend on individual patient considerations and the availability of suitable donor organs. In patients who have previously undergone a single lung transplant, retransplantation may be performed on the same side (removing the old graft) or on the opposite side (leaving the old graft in place). Patients who have had a previous bilateral lung or heart-lung transplantation may undergo a repeat bilateral lung transplant procedure or, alternatively, a single lung retransplant, leaving one of the old lung grafts in place.
